Welcome
Welcome to www.converging-technologies.org. This is the Website of the EU-funded research project 'Knowledge Politics and New Converging Technologies; A Social Science Perspective'.
Science fiction is looking less like fiction with new developments in nanotechnology, biotechnology, information technology and coginitve science (NBIC). If the proponents of NBIC 'convergence' are correct, emerging technologies may point to radical transformations in the natural world and in the very meaning of 'humanity'. The prospect arouses both horror and fascination; it calls urgently for clearer analysis of the issues.

People interested in the Converging Technologies agenda may wish to attend the Warwick Sociology Department's annual debate, which will concern the following proposition:
'There is no scientific basis to the concept of humanity'
Arguing PRO is Prof. John Harris, who holds the chair in bioethics at the University of Manchester and is the author of 'Enhancing Evolution' (Princeton 2007).
Arguing CON is Prof. Steve Fuller of Warwick.
The debate will occur on Monday 19th May 2008 at 5.30-7.00 pm in the Ramphal Building of the University of Warwick.
We also expect that Peter Sloterdijk will be visiting the campus that week, so there should be more 'trans-' and 'post-' humanist activities for those interested in hanging around.
